Morning Mountain, Nelson, BC - Into Emily's Backyard

Nelson is a beautiful town in southern British Columbia.

It is located in the Selkirk Mountains on the West Arm of Kootenay Lake. It is recognized for its impressive snowfall which brings amazing skiing in winter, followed by a massive network of well-maintained mountain bike trails for the summer. I have been here all summer and I have yet to check off all the trails in the area.

Morning mountain is located at a 5-10 minute drive West of Nelson. There is a main parking lot at the end of the gravel road where you can find a mini bike station with a hose, pump, tools and brushes.

THE RIDE DETAILS

✧ Trail names: Turn Styles and Lefty

✧ Up tracks: Bottoms up and Upper bottoms

✧ # of km’s: 8.2+

✧ Elevation gain: 441m

✧ Level: Intermediate-Advance (the jumps can be rolled)

✧ Duration: 1-2 hours

These two trails combined will make you feel like you’re at a bike park in the backcountry. They are very flowy machine built trails with wallrides, bridges, jumps, gaps, berms and drops. Each of them is rated as a black diamond but every feature has a ride-around, and all jumps can be rolled meaning that it can be as smooth or as challenging as you make it. When I first moved to the Kootenays, I had barely ever ridden off drops or gotten air off jumps. These two trails gave me the confidence I needed to slowly start pushing my limits and trusting my bike while cornering and being in the air.

The views coming down from Turn styles will make the way up worth it! The up track is 6.2 km of gradual switch backs in the beautiful forest. The trails are well indicated with signage at each intersection on the way up as well as the way down.

Only 10 minutes from downtown Nelson is the network of great trails that you will find at Morning Mountain that can keep you busy for an entire day. Check out the trails Placenta and High Baller in the same location to add on to this loop for some more technical and rocky riding.

I love to wear my Peppermint long sleeve Mist MTB Jersey, my Peppermint MTB shorts and, of course, a pair of fun socks to match. I rarely ride without my signature bib shorts to provide comfort for longer days on the saddle!

Don’t forget to stop at one of our local breweries for some well-deserved beers. Located on main street is my personal favourite, Backroads Brewery. They have an outdoor patio and always have a great selection on tap. For the coffee lovers, check out Empire Coffee in the Adventure Hotel for some of their delicious lattes.
