My relationship with cycling began about 40 years ago. I remember outgrowing my first green tricycle and getting a brand new orange 10 speed. It was this bike that gave me the freedom to go places. It gave me the confidence to get on my bike and just go, without the fear of getting lost. I remember moving to a new country and actually trying to get lost…but as luck would have it, I always ended up finding new ways to get to school or work and I always found my way home.
When I moved back to Canada, I was without a bike for quite sometime and so I found running again. I dove headfirst into competing in track, then middle distance and eventually trail running.
After some time, a running injury reminded me to pick up the bike again - as rehab. I transitioned from cycling as transportation to the sport of cycling, by a friend who introduced me to Duathlon. Finally, there was a way that I could combine the love of both disciplines. Shortly after I started racing Duathlon, a bike trip to Europe introduced me to Cyclocross. Yet ANOTHER way to combine my love of running and cycling!
Ultimately, while I do love to compete, I really love to run and cycle just for the joy of it. With no set destination and no set pace. As a Peppermint Ambassador, I’d love to share this passion with others and encourage women – regardless of age or stage of life – you can pick up a bike and just go.
